Home » Middle School – Grades 7-8 – Developing Intellect And Identity
Grades 7 and 8 introduce greater academic challenge and personal expression. Students think critically, engage multiple perspectives, and define themselves as learners and individuals.
Grade 7 explores the Renaissance and Age of Discovery, connecting historical shifts to personal development. Advanced algebra and geometry combine with research papers and creative writing. Science covers astronomy, physiology, and chemistry through hands-on labs, while artistic work includes veil painting, felting, and ensemble music.
Grade 8 synthesizes learning through American history from the Revolution to Civil Rights and global revolutions. Mathematics advances to systems of equations and solid geometry. Science explores anatomy, meteorology, and organic chemistry. Independent projects in woodworking and visual arts develop technical skills and creativity.
Science education begins with direct observation and inquiry. In mathematics, students engage in geometry and algebra
The humanities program is designed to meet students at each stage of their development—intellectually, emotionally, and imaginatively. Courses in literature, history, and social studies are integrated into immersive Main Lessons which connect deeply to students' evolving sense of self and their place in the world. Writing is central to the humanities experience, with students mastering multiple genres while developing strong citation skills and ethical research practices.
Every student participates in performing arts engaging with visual, dramatic, musical, and practical art forms. Students paint, draw, sculpt, print, sew, and build. They act in class plays, play instruments in ensembles, and study music history and theory. The arts teach students to observe carefully, to express with nuance, and to connect intellectually and emotionally to the material they study.
At Pine Forest, students learn Spanish. Language classes go beyond grammar and vocabulary through literature, song, conversation, and cultural exploration.
Main Lesson is a 3-4 week intensive block of study. Topics are chosen for both academic significance and developmental appropriateness, allowing deep exploration of subjects.
Students develop digital literacy skills for thoughtful participation in the digital age. Students in middle school use technology for research and presentations.
Physical education fosters lifelong healthy habits and attitudes.
Each year includes a Class Trip – an event much anticipated and long remembered by the students. Class Trips are designed to enhance the curriculum, strengthen the class community, and serve others.
